Where the Path Narrows
Beneath the Green
The world grows quiet
when the trail grows thin,
where moss holds memory
and stories begin.
No map, no signs,
just earth and air,
the path may vanish,
but you’re meant to be there.
Where the Path Narrows
The trail doesn't go far, but once you're under the trees, the world feels smaller and quieter, like it's holding its breath. Your focus shifts to the space right in front of you.
This photo was taken on a yesterday evening at Dungeness Wildlife Refuge, just outside Sequim. The rest of the photo club had already packed up and left, our hour walk was over, but I wasn’t ready to head back yet. It had been a long full week at work and I needed a little space. So I turned and walked the opposite direction, alone, just to let my thoughts settle and enjoy a few quiet minutes with my camera.
It’s easy for me to get caught up in the busyness of everything. Work, responsibilities, to-do lists that never shrink. I hadn’t really made time for myself all week, and stepping into the quiet of the woods felt like finally coming up for air.
This isn’t the side of Dungeness most people come to see. It’s not the iconic spit or the sweeping coastal views. This trail winds through one of the quieter inland sections, where everything feels slower and more sheltered. The kind of place you could walk right past if you weren’t paying attention.
The branches above reach toward each other like old friends, covered in soft green moss. They form a natural archway that seems to ask you to slow down, to notice what's around you. The path here is narrow, just wide enough for one person at a time, and something about that felt fitting.
I stood there for a while, not really thinking about the next shot or how the photo would turn out. Just breathing, listening. Letting the stillness do what I needed it to do.
These are the moments that pull me back to photography, these quiet in-between places. The ones that don’t ask much from you, just that you be present.
I’ve learned over time that the best photographs often happen when you stop trying to take one. When you set everything down and just let the moment find you.
Thanks for wandering with me through this quiet corner of the woods. I didn’t go looking for anything that evening, but I found exactly what I needed.
